DAHLIAS, DAHLIA TUBERS, THE JOURNEY…

At Blossom Valley Fruits & Flowers in Copemish, Michigan, we grow a variety of dahlias that do especially well in our northern climate. What started as a love for their color and form has grown into a small but thoughtful collection of tubers we are offering for the first time.

What to Expect From Your Dahlia Tuber:
Dahlia tubers are a quirky bunch—no two look the same. Some are plump, others are long and skinny. You might see bumps, wrinkles, twists, indents or even a little peeling skin near the neck. Occasionally, a tuber gets nicked during harvest or trimmed intentionally for storage. All of this is normal! What matters most is that each tuber has a healthy, intact neck and a viable eye—that tiny growth point that becomes your dahlia plant. We don’t send out tubers with broken necks or any signs of rot. If you plant your tuber with a little care and attention, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful bloom. If you're new to growing dahlias, I highly recommend taking a little time to learn about planting and care—there are plenty of helpful resources online to get you off to a great start.

Tuber Care:
Your tubers will arrive in baggies with peat moss, left partially open to let them breathe and prevent moisture build-up. Avoid storing them in sealed plastic bags—let them stay open a little.

When they arrive, keep the tubers in a cool, dry place until planting (with the bags opened and/or unzipped). Don’t store them where they could freeze—just one night in a freezing garage can ruin a tuber (trust me, we’ve learned the hard way!). We sell individual tubers, not clumps, and only offer our best ones. Any funky tuber that is questionable stays on the farm (though most of them grow just as well!). Tuber sizes vary by variety. We plant just about any size (1 1/2” small and up), but remember, bigger tubers don’t mean bigger plants. Each tuber is inspected 2-4 times to make sure there’s at least 1 eye. After planting, give them 5-6 weeks to start growing—some can take until July to sprout (come on already).

Plant Health & Disease:
Dahlias Can Show Stress, But We’ve Got You Covered

Dahlias, like all plants, can show signs of stress when they’re dehydrated, malnourished, or not given the care they deserve. While I can’t test every single plant for disease, we work extremely hard to inspect each one throughout the growing season, looking for any signs of illness and removing affected plants when necessary. You might notice multiple eyes on some of your tubers—this is a good thing! I’ve had plenty of tubers with three or more eyes, and they still grow beautifully. If you’re concerned about seeing multiple eyes on the tubers you receive, please reach out to us — we’re here to help and clear up any confusion!

Ordering Tubers:
A Heads-Up on Availability & Ordering Tips

As a small-scale grower, we don’t have an endless supply of tubers. Some varieties produce lots of tubers, while others not so much. Certain varieties may sell out quickly, so if you have your eye on something special, we recommend setting up an account on the website for quicker checkout.

A few quick notes to help everything go smoothly:

🌼 Cart ≠ Reservation
Putting items in your cart does not reserve them. Unfortunately, the website isn’t like a cozy farmstand table where we can set your tubers aside with a Post-it note. Items are only yours once you check out and pay. (We wish it worked differently too!)

Speed Matters
If you’ve got your heart set on a certain variety, check out as soon as you can. The early bird gets the Café au Lait!

👩‍💻 Create an Account for Smoother Checkout
This is optional but super handy. Setting up an account at blossomvalleyfruitfarm.com ahead of time lets you save your shipping and billing info so you're not typing like a madwoman while your favorite tubers fly off the shelves.

📝 How to Make an Account
Go to our homepage, click the “Login” button (top right), and fill in your details. Easy peasy! Just remember to save your login info—we don’t keep that info on file (we’re flower farmers, not tech giants).

📦 Combining Orders
If you order some dahlias, then come back the next day because you just can’t stop thinking about them (been there), we offer combined shipping! Check the box at checkout to let us know. There's a 48-hour window for this, and we'll refund any shipping savings after the shipping season is complete. (Thanks for your patience—this isn’t Amazon Prime, it’s Lisa + a label printer.)

🚗 Local Pick-Up – Save the Date!
Come say hi and grab your tubers in person!

Local pick-up is Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the farm:
Blossom Valley Fruits & Flowers 22470 Adams Rd., Copemish, MI 49625

This is the only pick-up day, so if you can't make it, please select shipping at checkout.

Shipping & Receiving Your Tubers:
What to Expect When Your Tubers Arrive

We will ship your tubers via USPS from late-April to early May within the U.S. Once your tubers arrive, please open the package and inspect them right away. If there are any issues, you’ll have 48 hours to contact us with photos or video. We will assess the situation and find a solution, which may include returning the tuber at your expense. While we will pack everything carefully, we can not be responsible for shipping mishaps, undelivered packages, or the package being delivered to the neighbor’s home.

Mislabeling & Varietal Differences:
What Happens If Your Tuber Isn’t Exactly as Expected

We are a small operation and handle everything ourselves—from planting to harvesting, dividing, and storing—but mistakes can happen. Climate, growing conditions, and seasonality can affect the look of your blooms, so they might not look exactly like the photos on the website. If you suspect a mislabel, reach out to us, and we’ll work together to find a solution. (Or, like we’ve done in the past, keep it and love the new dahlia you didn’t even know about!)

Some Final Thoughts:
A Little About Me, My Passion for Dahlias, and How I Work

Growing flowers is my passion, and sharing that beauty with others brings me so much joy. Flower farming (and dahlia farming) is a ton of hard work, and a labor of love. Between growing, running a business, and balancing family life, it is overwhelming at times. That said, my hope is that the dahlias you receive bring you the same happiness they bring me. If you choose to buy from us, I promise respectful, open communication. I’m committed to providing the best possible product and treating you the way I’d want to be treated as a customer. May your garden be your happy place—just like mine!
